Linear Inequality Measures and the Redistribution of Income
نویسندگان
چکیده
A class of inequality measures that is a natural companion to the popular Lorenz curve is the class of measures that are linear in incomes. These measures, which include the Gini and S-Gini coefficients, can be interpreted as ethical means of relative deprivation feelings. Their change through the tax and benefit system can be decomposed simply as a sum of progressivity indices for individual taxes and benefits, minus an index of horizontal inequity measured by the extent of reranking in the population. These progressivity and horizontal inequity indices can also be interpreted as ethical means of perceptions of fiscal harshness and ill-performance. We furthermore derive the asymptotic sampling distribution of these classes of indices of redistribution, progressivity, and horizontal inequity, which enables their use with micro-data on a population. We illustrate the theoretical and statistical results through an application on the distribution and redistribution of income in Canada in 1981 and in 1990. JEL numbers: D31, D63, H23, I38

Analyzing the Causal Relationships between Economic Growth, Income Inequality, and Transmission Channels: New Empirical Evidences from Iran
This paper investigates causal relations between economic growth, income inequality, and transmission channels during the period 1972 to 2016. These channels include saving rate, investment rate, redistribution policies, human capital, and conspicuous consumption. There is no strong evidence that supports uni-directional or bi-directional causality. In addition, some of the transmission channel...

The allocation of opportunities affects income distribution and income inequality. This paper analyzes the economic impacts of initial allocation of resources and redistribution of opportunities. In this study, we apply a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model focusing on distribution of opportunities and allocation of available resources. The differences between households' income are ca...
متن کاملON TRUNCATED MEASURES OF INCOME INEQUALITY FROM A FUZZY PERSPECTIVE
In most statistical analysis, inequality or extent of variation in income isrepresented in terms of certain summary measures. But some authors arguedthat the concept of inequality is vague and thus cannot be measured as anexact concept. Therefore, fuzzy set theory provides naturally a useful toolfor such circumstances. In this paper we have introduced a real-valued fuzzymethod of illustrating t...
متن کاملEthical inequality measures and the redistribution of income when needs differ
The paper considers social welfare functions and ethical inequality measures for linear inequality concepts when households may differ in needs. The welfare functions are nested, i.e. separable in the level of welfare attained by the homogeneous subpopulations, and possess a homogeneity property depending on the inequality concept imposed. Several principles of transfers between different house...
متن کاملA Global Social Support System: What the International Community Could Learn From the United States’ National Basketball Association’s Scheme for Redistribution of New Talent
If global trade were fair, it is argued, then international aid would be unnecessary and inequalities inherent to the economic system would be justifiable. Here, we argue that while global trade is unfair, in part because richer countries set the rules, we believe that additional interventions must go beyond trade regulation and short-term aid to redress inequalities among countries that will p...
